Hyderabad: Telangana emerged as one of the richer States in the country recording GST collections of Rs 3,276 crore in June this year. The State witnessed a three per cent growth over Rs 3,166 crore GST collected in June last year, despite the COVID-19 pandemic and the subsequent lockdown.

The gross GST collections for June stood at Rs 90,917 crore at national level, about nine per cent lower than GST revenue in June, 2019. The June GST collections are higher than those recorded in April and May, the peak months of lockdown due to COVID-19 pandemic. The GST collection for April was Rs 32,294 crore and Rs 62,009 crore for May.

Of the total GST collections in June, CGST was Rs 18,980 crore, SGST Rs 23,970 crore and IGST Rs 40,302 crore (including Rs 15,709 crore collected on import of goods). The cess collections stood at Rs 7,665 crore (including Rs 607 crore collected on import of goods). After settlement of IGST, the total revenue earned by the Cental government and the State governments after regular settlement in the month of June,2020, was Rs 32,305 crore for CGST and Rs 35,087 crore for SGST.

Among the large States, Maharashtra emerged as the highest earner in GST collections at Rs 14,987 crore, which was one per cent lower than the State’s GST collection in June last year. Similarly, Karnataka was second largest GST earner with Rs 6,710 crore, recording a growth of one per cent when compared to June last year.

Officials said the revenues during the last few months had severely sufferred due to COVID-19. “The pandemic caused severe economic impact on tax collections. Further, the Centre also relaxed schedules for filing GST returns, allowing the GST payers to file their returns later for the months of February, March, April and even May. Accordingly, the GST returns for May 2020 which were scheduled to be filed in June, have been allowed to be filed in July. Thus, the overall growth in GST collections has been slow,” the officials said, adding that a large number of taxpayers were yet to file their returns for the month of May, 2020.
