Hyderabad: Scoffed and ridiculed at birth on June 2, 2014, as an infant State without any future, Telangana, after the tentative steps in the first few months, rose to be a front-runner among the States in the nation. And in an incredibly short span of just six years, the rapid progress that Telangana has made in the key areas of industry, agriculture, power, irrigation, medical and health and education besides welfare of various sections of society, has been mind-boggling, setting benchmarks for others to follow.
The tremendous achievements in various sectors have been made possible essentially because of the core belief of the K Chandrashekhar Rao government that nothing is impossible if one applies the mind, displays commitment, and has the grit and determination to reach the goals. The first big achievement that happened in the State, which served as a precursor of things to come, was the elimination of problems in the power sector. No sooner than Statehood was achieved, power cuts vanished, much to the astonishment of the people.
Chandrashekhar Rao is clearly a man in a hurry, as he took up project after project at a frenetic pace, covering irrigation, power, industry, agriculture, healthcare, education and welfare of the people, particularly the farmers and the marginalised sections of society.
If the path-breaking mega Kaleshwaram Lift Irrigation Scheme, along with other projects, changed the landscape of Telangana from a parched look to lush green paddy fields, the Chief Minister also ensured that the efforts at providing water are complemented with annual financial assistance to the farmers in the form of Rythu Bandhu, besides securing their lives with Rythu Bima. Little wonder then the farmers of the State have been producing bumper crops year after year, with Yasangi-2019 yielding a record 1.03 crore metric tonnes of paddy.
The unbridled growth in the farm sector set the government thinking for demand-based, scientific, cluster crop cultivation, and thus came the regulated farming policy, the first of its kind in the country that would be introduced from this Vaanakalam season.
Among other innovative initiatives of the TRS government, Mission Bhagiratha and Mission Kakatiya, have won nationwide accolades with several States in the process of implementing them. While Mission Kakatiya has rejuvenated the 45,000-odd lakes and villages tanks in the State, Mission Bhagiratha has successfully ensured that all the households in the State get potable water in their house taps.
On the industry front, led by IT and Industries Minister K T Rama Rao, the State came up with several revolutionary initiatives, with the TS-iPASS standing out as an excellent administrative tool to attract global investment. The single window clearance system and other initiatives took Telangana to the top spot in ‘Ease of Doing Business,’ no mean achievement at that.
On the IT front too, the State, which already boasts of having a hugely popular IT destination in Hyderabad, has been consistently and successfully pushing for Tier II cities like Warangal, Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Mahabubnagar to emerge as alternative space for the sector.
In healthcare, the State has achieved tremendous success in increasing institutional deliveries through schemes like KCR Kits, besides launching innovative programmes like Kanti Velugu to remove the darkness from the lives of the people, particularly the rural poor.
The State also invested big time in the education sector, opening up education for the marginalised sections of society by increasing the number of ST, SC, BC and minorities welfare residential schools which have not only proved to be hugely popular, but have also been churning out top rankers every year who get into premier educational institutions for higher studies.
In a nutshell, Chandrashekhar Rao, the brain behind all the initiatives, set a scorching pace for development of all sectors, placing Telangana where it is today. Given the voracious appetite of the TRS government to overcome all odds, the setback, if one may call it that, on account of the pandemic coronavirus, should also be a thing of the past, and the State would soon be seen galloping again towards achieving its dream of ‘Bangaru Telangana.’
