Most of the schools and colleges organised programmes on their premises to inculcate a habit of practising yoga among the younger generation.
The previous record was set in Delhi on June 21, 2015, when 35,985 people performed yoga at Rajpath with Prime Minister Narendra Modi. As per the government release here, 54,522 people took part in the Yoga Day event at GMDC ground on Wednesday, beating the earlier record by a margin of over 18,000.
The French Embassy in India also announced that it will hold a Yoga and music programme on June 21.
On Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call, the UN General Assembly declared in December 2014 that June 21 would be observed as International Yoga Day every year.
India's Ambassador to Cairo Sanjay Bhattacharyya said this time is very special as there is a strong connection between the spirit of yoga and the spirit of Ramadan.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a series of tweets appreciated the practice of yoga, calling it an "integrating" force.
"Grandparents, parents and children should together perform yoga and also upload their photos. It will be such a pleasant blend of yesterday, today and tomorrow -- lending a new dimension to yoga," said Modi.
UN Postal Administration (UNPA) will issue the new special event sheet to commemorate Yoga Day that has been marked annually since 2015.
