SCCL ensures coal supply to thermal plants

Mancherial: The State-owned coal major Singerani Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) is playing a vital role in power generation by ensuring coal supply to thermal power plants and thereby ensuring electricity in these testing times of lockdown. It has been dispatching 1.11 lakh tonnes of coal to the plants per day from the open cast projects despite challenges.

Following instructions from Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao, the coal giant is leaving no stone unturned to supply coal to thermal power plants in Telangana. It has provided 9 lakh tonnes of coal to Telangana State Power Generation Corporation TS GENCO, besides supplying 5 lakh tonnes of coal to its own thermal power plant in Jaipur of Mancherial district. The plants now have stocks that can meet the requirement for about 25 days, SCCL sources told Telangana Today.

Similarly, the SCCL has come to the rescue of neighboring States as well. It supplied 8.8 lakh tonnes of coal to thermal power plants belonging to National Thermal Power Corporation. It has extended 4 lakh tonnes of coal to Maharashtra’s thermal plants, 3.3 lakh tonnes of coal to Karnataka and 1.60 lakh tonnes of coal to Andhra Pradesh.

SCCL faces hardships

The coal major is facing some challenges in excavating coal. Due to lockdown norms, it suspended operations in 22 underground mines, keeping in mind the safety of miners. It is now depending on 18 open cast projects and five mechanized mines. “Despite challenges, the SCCL has managed to supply 33 lakh tonnes of coal to thermal power plants in Telangana and neighboring States in the last one month,” a senior officer told ‘Telangana Today.’

SCCL chairman and managing director N Sridhar has been boosting the confidence and motivating the staff to improve output by constantly speaking to miners and creating awareness over the need to live up to the expectations of the Chief Minister. He is giving suggestions and tips to officials concerned in increasing production of the coal.

Meanwhile, the management of the coal giant is taking precautionary measures to prevent spread of the novel coronavirus. It has given paramount importance to safety of workers who are engaged in mining coal. It is supplying face masks to miners and spraying disinfectants at work sites of the projects located in six districts of Telangana State.
