Hyderabad: The Special Operations Team (SOT) of the Rachakonda police on Thursday caught 13 persons who were allegedly involved in smuggling of rice meant for Public Distribution Scheme (PDS). The sleuths seized 50 tonnes of the PDS rice, a lorry and Rs 13,060 cash from them.
Mohammed Zaheeruddin, who is allegedly the main organiser of the racket, along with his associates was procuring the PDS rice from the beneficiaries and local agents.
“After purchasing the commodity, they stored it at various godowns in the city and shifted to companies in neighbouring Karnataka,” said J Surendra Reddy, Additional DCP (SOT) Rachakonda.
The rice was refined in the companies in neighbouring States and after re-refining the PDS rice, the gang again diverted it into the open market and made profits, the police said. The accused persons were handed over to the Uppal police station for further action.
