Rachakonda police launch hunt for man posing as Customs official


Hyderabad: The Rachakonda Police Special Operations Team on Tuesday launched a hunt for a fake Customs officer, who allegedly cheated people by promising to give 30 per cent returns on investing Rs 1 lakh in his business.

According to G Naveen Kumar, Inspector- SOT, the residents of Chengicharla village near Uppal lodged a complaint with the Medipally police stating that they had lost money to the suspect. The suspect, identified as Soumen Banerjee (40), had lured them in the guise of a Customs officer from the Visakhapatnam Port, police said.

“He asked them to invest in his business, promising them 30 percent returns for an investment of Rs 1 lakh,” Kumar said.

A native of Kolkata, Banerjee came to the city six years ago and was staying in Chengicharla along with his wife and son. After inquiring about his background, police found that he had cheated people in his native place in a similar manner and that several cases were registered against him.

Banerjee reportedly has 20 bank accounts and 15 SIM cards.
