Pseudo cop on the prowl on the outskirts of Hyderabad

Hyderabad: A pseudo cop is on the prowl on the city outskirts, especially in areas under the Rachakonda Police Commissionerate, and in the last one week, has managed to cheat at least three persons of money and valuables.

With complaints coming in on the man posing as a police constable and ‘levying hefty fines’ on commuters, the Rachakonda police are now on the lookout for the impersonator.

Rachakonda Commissioner Mahesh M Bhagwat said here on Thursday that the fraudster was stopping vehicles on the pretext of vehicle checking on the city outskirts at night and fleecing unsuspecting people.

“Clad in the uniform of a police constable, he is demanding money from the public. He is also threatening those who refuse to pay, saying cases will be booked against them or that they will be sent to prison,” he said.

Over the last one week, he said, three such cases were reported in Rachakonda Commissionerate limits. In a case registered on January 30, the suspect intercepted a 70-year-old man at Netaji Nagar and forcibly took away his gold ornaments. On February 1, he looted money from a 55-year-old person in Saketh near LB Nagar, and on February 2 he took nearly Rs 20,000 from a 42-year-old person at Ghanpur Bridge.

“All the three cases took place between 8.30 pm and 8.45 pm,” he said, adding that a special team was constituted to nab the impersonator.

The Commissioner also urged the public not to give money to any police officer in an illegal way. The Police and Road and Transport Authority (RTA) officials would conduct vehicle checks wearing uniforms and the team would consist at least five personnel, he said.
