Hyderabad: Babycare products player Mother Sparsh, which sells water-based wipes through e-commerce channels as well through niche stores like the FirstCry and others, has plans to set up a manufacturing unit near Hyderabad, said its founder and managing director Rishu Gandhi.

“Wipes have become a modern parenting convenience to maintain baby’s hygiene. However, these disposable wipes add to the growing garbage and is the third largest consumer item in landfills representing about 30 per cent of non-bio-degradable waste. We want to address this problem by using water and plant extracts only to make wipes that are biodegradable,” says Gandhi adding that the product has taken two years of research.

Now, the company is making the wipes through a third party manufacturer and it is looking to have a similar arrangement in the Southern States to cater to the rising demand.

“We are keen on having our own manufacturing facility near Hyderabad when our sales touch a threshold. This could happen by January 2019,” she said adding that the unit could see and investment of Rs 4-5 crore.

A manufacturing unit in Hyderabad will allow it to reach cities like Pune, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Chennai- which all are its growing markets. This will ease out the logistical issues that it is now facing now due to its single unit in North India. It keeps a monthly stock of 30,000 units.

Last year, it sold about a lakh units. “We are getting over 60 per cent of the demand from South Indian Markets. Hyderabad, a growing cosmopolitan city with an influx of corporate working individuals, has shown good demand for our products, taking a notable 25 per cent of the demand,” she said adding that the company has plans to make its products available in over 1000 retail outlets in Southern States. Mother Sparsh, which also sells baby powder, has seen a turnover of Rs 2 cr in 2017-18 through sales on Amazon, Flipkart and FirstCry.

The company has so far invested about Rs 4 crore, she said. It now sells a pack of 80 wipes for Rs 175 and a three-pack with 240 wipes for Rs 525. It is now working to bring the product at lower price points of Rs 65 for a pack of 15 wipes. Also, premium wipes that will be gentle, soft and thick, will be launched, she said.
