Mahabubabad: Police arrested a member of the CPI (ML) New Democracy (Rayala faction) and seized an 8 mm riffle, 30 rounds of ammunition and a kit from him near Kodipunjula thanda on the outskirts of Gauraram village in Bayyaram mandal in the district on Saturday. The arrested has been identified as Sangepu Mahesh alias Sudheer of Gajual Gattu village in Gudur mandal of the district.
Disclosing the details at a press conference at Bayyaram police station, Mahabubabad SP N Koti Reddy said that the police had received information that ND squad was meeting near Kodipunjula thanda to discuss plans to threaten the opponents in the first phase of the MPTC/ZPTC elections, which are scheduled for April 6, and see that their party candidates would win the seats.
“Following this, I sent a special party to conduct combing in the area. Noticing this, the squad members had tried to escape from the scene. However, the police had nabbed Mahesh with weapon,” the SP said.
It is said that Danasari Sammaiah alias Goapnna, erstwhile Warangal district secretary, Suryam, Mahabubabad district secretary, Gatti Krishna of Khanapur mandal committee member, and Shyam of Gunjedu village committee member were at the meeting, when the police raided the spot.
Mahesh has been working as the underground member of the party since 2012. “He was accused of a double murder case, and also involved extortion cases,” the SP added. He was earlier arrested and sent to jail. However, he joined the underground party again six months ago and was working as the gunman to Gopanna. Koti Reddy said that they would soon nab the absconding underground leaders of the CPI (ML) ND Royala faction.
Bayyaram CI Y Ramesh, Mahabubabad Rural CI J Venkataratnam, four SIs and other policemen participated in the operation.
