Hyderabad: Director of KIMS-Ushalakshmi Centre for Breast Diseases, Dr. P Raghu Ram delivered a lecture on ‘Cancer Care’ as part of a panel discussion ‘Stuff of Life: Exploring Health, Well-being and Society’ in Innovation and Knowledge (INK) conference at HITEX, as a prelude to the GES.
Dr. Raghu Ram highlighted importance of counselling in cancer care and the urgent need to introduce this concept into the Indian medical curriculum in the panel discussion, which was moderated by Lakshmi Pratury, Curator and host of INK 2017.
The panel discussion also included classical dancer and breast cancer survivor Ananda Shankar Jayant and Executive Director, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Mr Raghu Gullapalli.
In his talk, the cancer experts said that it was the duty of the doctors to counsel patients by addressing their fears, anxieties and equally preparing the mind to deal with the illness.
“Cancer does not just affect the body, it impacts the body and mind. Hence, treating just the body is not adequate. Preparing the patient mentally helps enormously in coping with the diagnosis of cancer and gaining inner strength to deal with the treatments offered,” Dr. Raghu Ram said.
Ananda Shankar Jayant said that counselling at every stage during her treatment helped her to come to terms with the diagnosis and prepare her to complete treatment.
