Hyderabad: Irked by fake profiles and Facebook pages of State Ministers and people’s representatives, the State government on Friday said it would initiate stringent action against those who create fake or impersonate social media accounts in the name of government, its agencies and elected representatives.
The government’s Digital Media wing under the IT Department, in collaboration with the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), has been managing content on the official Facebook account of Telangana CMO. It also manages content on official Facebook account of Industries and IT Minister K T Rama Rao.
All the official Facebook accounts of State Cabinet Ministers, government departments and elected representatives are marked with a ‘Verified’ blue tick mark. This marking indicates the authenticity of official accounts on Facebook.
Being a private platform, any individual can open an account on Facebook. However, a few overenthusiastic individuals have been creating accounts in the name of the State government and elected representatives. In order to prevent spread of misleading content through these fake accounts, the Digital Media wing had previously issued warnings to such individuals. And when they did not respond, the Digital Media wing took down these accounts with the help of Cyber Crimes wing of Police Department and Facebook.
In the past two years, Digital Media wing has removed about 130 such fake/impersonator accounts in the name of State government and elected representatives. “We are against filing cases since we know that most of these pages are set up by admirers of leaders or ministers. But, they do not realize that what they are doing is misleading,” Dileep Konatham, Director (Digital Media), IT Department, told Telangana Today.
About 15 such accounts have been identified and the process to remove them has been initiated. We noticed that few individuals are continuing to create fake accounts in the name of State government. The IT Department has not booked cases against anyone so far, but if such behaviour persists, the department will be constrained to take stringent action,” he said.
He also appealed to people to report any such profiles, if they come across any, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
