Nalgonda: The Central Crime Station and Nakrekal police arrested an inter-state gang that was infamous for stealing ATM cards and withdrawing money from people’s bank accounts.
The arrested were identified as Kurshid and Mohammed Asim – both 22 years old – 21-year-old Aleem and Mulamfar Ali, who are from Haryana. The police seized Rs 2.34 lakh cash, nine ATM cards, a car and two mobile phones from them.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) S Sudhakar said the gang committed offences in Nalgonda, Nirmal, Kamareddy and Khammam ditricts, apart from cheating many in Nagpur, Maharashtra.
The gang used to replace people’s ATM cards with duplicate ones on the pretext of helping them withdraw cash and operating the machine. Later, they would withdraw money. The gang targeted uneducated people and the elderly, who did not know to operate an ATM.
One of the many victims was S Krishna Murthy from Itukulaphad village. He told the police that some unknown people cheated him by replacing his ATM card with a fake one and withdrew money from his account. The Nakrekal police initiated a probe and traced the gang’s car using CCTV footage.
During a routine vehicle checkup at Chandanapally bypass near Nakrekal, the police took the gang into their custody. The accused confessed to their crime.
