Hyderabad: A newborn baby girl was found abandoned in a secluded place behind the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Punjagutta here on Wednesday. Police suspect the infant was abandoned by her parents.
Around 11 am, local residents heard the cries of the baby and found the child wrapped in a cloth and abandoned under a tree. She is suspected to be about one week old.
On receiving information, the Punjagutta police reached the spot and shifted the infant to the hospital for a medical check-up. She was later handed over to the Shishu Vihar authorities in Yousufguda for safe custody. Her health condition is stable, said the Punjagutta police, who have booked a case and are investigating.
Footage from surveillance cameras in the surroundings are being examined to identify the offenders, while data on recent deliveries in hospitals in the vicinity too is being collected.
Following the incident, child rights activists raised concern over frequent such incidents.
“The incidents of abandonment of newborn babies are seeing an increase of late. This is the third such incident within a month in the city,” said Achyuta Rao of Balala Hakkula Sangham.
