Gang held in Hyderabad for supplying foreign liquor

Hyderabad: A seven-member gang was arrested on Sunday by the Special Task Force police of Prohibition and Excise Department on charges of supplying foreign liquor. The suspects arrested were identified as Harish Singh, Rajesh, K Bhaskar, Gopi Krishna, G Anil, Niranjan Reddy and D Mahesh. Prohibition and Excise Enforcement director Akun Sabharwal said for the past four months a special task force team was in search of the prime suspect, Harish Singh.

Singh, a resident of Dhoolpet, was procuring foreign liquor through unidentified smugglers and bringing it here via Chennai seaport and airport with the help of his accomplices. The gang was involved in eight similar cases and was absconding since 2014. Based on credible information, the police conducted a decoy operation at LB Nagar and Singh was caught red-handed while trying to export 220 liquor bottles via a private travels bus. “From the gang, the team seized 220 liquor bottles worth of Rs 75 lakh,” he said. The task force officials till now have seized 1,800 foreign liquor bottles pertaining to the eight cases booked against Singh and his gang.

“The suspects used to supply 900 liquor bottles worth Rs 50 lakh every month,” Sabharwal said, adding that two days ago, Shiva Patil was arrested pertaining to a similar offence. He said cases would be booked against owners and firms of the private travels if they are found involved in the supply of foreign liquor bottles or related crime. “Manufacturing, selling, transportation and buying non-duty paid liquor is an offence under Section 34 (A) of Telangana Excise Act and action will be initiated accordingly against the persons involved as per the law,” Sabharwal added.
