Hyderabad: A total of 16 teams will play a friendly football tournament to commemorate World Refugee Day-2018 at Quli Qutb Shah Stadium, Ghansi Bazaar between June 20 and 22.
The football tournament is being organised by United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), Confederation of Voluntary Associations (COVA), Cyient Technologies Ltd, and the NGO Save The Children. While Cyient is funding the entire event, Telangana Football Association is collaborating for technical aid, said a spokesperson from Save The Children.
Of the 16 teams, three comprise of refugees, while the others are teams of corporate firms, public sector units and local football clubs. The three refugee teams are called Rohingya Football Academy, Rohingya Football Club Kishanbagh and Rohingya Football Club Hyderabad. Among the non-refugee teams are one each from Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Wesley Degree College.
On each of the three days, five matches will be held between 7 am and 6 pm. There will be a trophy each for the winner and runner-up team and certificates for all participating players.
“The objective is to increase visibility for refugees here. When we say refugees, we are mainly talking about Rohingya refugees, since in this region they constitute the majority of all refugees. Several of their children are unable to complete their education because of Aadhaar mandates,” said Save The Children general manager Vikas Gora.
