Mancherial: Venturing into a sports field is still a rarity for girls belonging to rural parts of erstwhile Adilabad. And, poverty always becomes a major hindrance to the females who choose a game. However, Ramtenki Supraja defied the two factors. She is now excelling in the game of handball. She was instrumental in Telangana’s team winning a gold medal in a national level competition. A native of remote Alugama village in Kotapalli Mandal, Supraja is the only daughter of a daily wager Banaiah and Chinnakka. She is studying Class X at a government high school of Luxettipet. She proved her mettle in handball when she participated in a district-level event conducted by School Games Federation in Mancherial in 2017.
The girl later was qualified for taking part in a State-level competition held in Siddipet and then was selected for representing Telangana in a national level competition organised in the same town from February 12 to 16. She displayed an outstanding performance in the event that saw participation of players belonging to 29 States. She played a vital role in the success of the team. Supraja’s talent was sensed by the physical director of her school K Ram Mohan when she was studying in Class VIII. “She owns physical features required for handball. She has coordination skill to play the game. All she needed was little training and a push,” Ram Mohan told ‘Telangana Today,’ adding, she will able to take part in Under-17 and 19 events in future.
“She has been good in academics since childhood. She is bringing recognition to Kotapalli and Mancherial district by shining in handball as well. It feels happy to see her excelling in the game. It fetched an identity to us,” Banaiah said. Locals were also exhilarated over the girl’s show and accorded a grand welcome to her when she returned to the village on February 19.
