Hyderabad: The president of Association of Surgeons of India and noted cancer specialist, Dr P Raghu Ram, has called upon doctors to be effective communicators to perform their role well. “Listen attentively to your patients and always keep their relatives in the loop. We can cure patients sometimes, provide them with relief often but we can comfort them always,” he said, while delivering the keynote address on ‘Communication in Medicine- Have we got it right’ as part of the inaugural of the Administrative Staff College of India’s (ASCI) two-year PG Diploma in Hospital Management (PGDHM) course.
Chairman of ASCI and former Union Home Secretary K Padmanabhaiah said that hospital managers should play a vital role in communicating to the patients. “Most of the doctors are very poor communicators. Hence, the managers should compensate or counter balance it,” he said.
The Director of the ASCI Healthcare Management Centre Dr Subodh Kandhamutan said that 60 students, most of them professionals including doctors, joined the course from 10 different States. ASCI DG Prof Nirmalya Bagchi, Dean of Training Programmes Prof Valli Manickam also spoke on the occassion.
