In high school, remember when your emotions were all over the place? This series really captures that. Created by Lauren Iungerich, Eddie Gonzalez, and Jeremy Haft, On My Block is about four friends in a rough inner-city Los Angeles neighbourhood and their transformation from middle school into high school. The main characters are Monse (Sierra Capri), Ruby (Jason Genao), Jamal (Bret Gray) and Cesar (Diego Tinoco).
The series picks up a few months later where school is beginning and the friendships are already being teased by Monse and Cesar’s secretive relationship and the possibility that the gang life is going to be too great for Cesar to escape. Between these ten episodes, one can see their relationship fumbling and picking up again, but still having a great chemistry throughout.
This show brings back those old high school memories, the good and the bad ones.
The show depicts how one should understand that they shouldn’t let where they come from define them. The series touches on normal coming-of-age topics like awkward school dances, discovering one’s sexuality and issues of the kids’ environment, like gang violence and racism.
