Adivasis accuse Maoists of extortion

Charla (Kothagudem): Pamphlets accusing Maoists of resorting to extortion surfaced in various villages in Charla mandal of Bhadradri Kothagudem district on Thursday.

The pamphlets, in the name of District Adivasi Associations, surfaced in Lenin Colony, Kothur, Anjanapuram, Thippapuram, Chelimela, Peddamedisilaru areas on Telangana-Chhattisgarh border, creating a sensation.

The associations questioned the moral right of the CPI (Maoist) Party to celebrate Women’s Day every year on March 8 in the agency villages, alleging that the party leaders torture women in a very cruel manner and hinder their growth in the party.

Citing instances, they said Kurnapalli village sarpanch Irpa Sushila was beaten up severely and a woman Kudam Ungi of Rallapuram was murdered by Maoists under the pretext that she practiced black magic. A Maoist leader Arun, who died recently, used to move around with minor girls. The party coerces innocent Adivasi girls to join its ranks. For Women’s Day celebrations, three kg rice and Rs 200 from each household, a cow and goat from each village were being demanded.

In addition, the Maoists were extorting money from people living in agency villages. They had to pay Rs 30,000 for owning a tractor, Rs 20,000 for autorickshaw and Rs 5,000 for a motorbike, the associations alleged.

They also alleged that besides Women’s Day, the Maoists used to extort goods and money to commemorate events such as PLGA week and others. In the past, only one authorised person used to collect funds. But now the situation was out of control in the CPI (Maoist) Telangana Committee as everyone collected money. Leaders such as Haribhushan, Lachhana, Azad, Sarada, Sodi Jogaiah were resorting to extortion, the pamphlet alleged.

The Maoists who claim to be fighting for Adivasi welfare were in fact hindering their progress and becoming obstacles for them in availing benefits offered by the government welfare schemes, the associations claimed.
