One good thing about Telugu film industry is the fact that every now and then, it chucks out a thorough entertainer, which ends up garnering appreciation from all age groups.

ABCD: American Born Confused Desi (though it is a remake of a Malayalam movie of the same name), is one such movie. It follows the story of a spoilt brat Aravind aka Avi, who is sent to India by his father in order to teach him a lesson in humility and the value of money.

Avi comes to Hyderabad as an ABCD and has a series of misadventures adapting to his life here, in a reverse Barrister Parvatheesam kind of a way. By a twist of fate, he ends up throwing a political gauntlet to a powerful businessman. What happens to this underdog makes up for the plot.

Comedy is the most accepted aspect in films and this film utilises that to great effect, seamlessly blending comic elements into the plot and the first half is a major laughter riot as it explores Avi’s adventures in his initial days in the country. While that goes on one side, it explores the ruthless, machiavellian budding politician Bhargava Babu’s (Raja Chembolu) attempts to foray into the world of politics. The first half perfectly establishes the protagonist and the antagonist characters.

Second half is predictable and goes just as one would expect. Nevertheless, the second half has some subtle elements such as when Avi talks about how a budget for the most basic lifestyle would cost a lot more than what the politicians say. The second half also has some goosebump inducing moments.

Just the way Avi rises above all odds and establishes himself as a leader, this film will establish Sirish as an actor. He delivers an intense performance in the second half. Bharath play comedian side-kick and delivers the exact same nostalgia inducing style of performance. Veterans Kota Srinivas Rao, Nagababu and Subhalekha Sudhakar deliver exactly what one would expect from them but it would have been better if the film had utilised their talent better.

Raja Chembolu also delivers an intense performance as a suave businessman who wouldn’t stop at anything to get his way. His portrayal of a sinister, yet charming youth icon will definitely earn him accolades. He dominates the screen whenever he’s on camera, something that isn’t easy for one relatively new in the industry.

An interesting premise, an intriguing plot, intense acting and an inspiring ending contribute towards making this film a thorough entertainer.
